Acer rubrum is the botanical name of the red maple. This tree is sometimes referred to as a swamp, water, or soft maple. The red maple is recognized by the US Forest Service as the most prevalent native tree in eastern North America. While this shade tree can grow throughout the United States, it is native to the entire eastern United States from Maine to Florida and west to Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, and Minnesota.
The red maple is a stunning shade tree that matures to between 40 to 60 feet tall and 30 feet wide. They are one of the best backyard trees. This tree blooms small clusters of red flowers in late winter to early spring before the leaves emerge. The unique fruits of the red maple (two-winged samaras) are initially red tinged. Dig a hole that is two times wider than the root ball. Place your tree level in the hole. The top of the root ball should be slightly higher than the existing soil line. This helps you to avoid planting too deep. Next, fill the soil back into the hole around the root ball. After planting, water deeply at the base of your red maple tree until the ground can no longer hold water. Apply a 1 to 2 inch layer of mulch around your new tree. Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk of the tree as this can encourage pests and disease.
