When to Plant Zone 4 Dwarf Trees

The best time to plant trees in USDA zone 4 is spring and early fall. Avoid planting in mid to late fall as it will not give your tree enough time to start to establish before harsh temperatures hit. Summer is actually a pretty good time to plant in this chilly growing zone since summers tend to be mild. Early or late summer is the best time to plant when summer planting. Always water a newly planted tree deeply and often especially when planting in summer.

How to Plant Dwarf Trees for Zone 4

Water your potted tree immediately before planting to reduce shock. Dig a hole at least twice as wide as the root ball of the tree. Place your tree in the hole and make sure it is upright and level. Make sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the existing soil line so that you know you haven’t planted your tree too deeply. Next, backfill the soil around your white flowering Florida tree and tamp it down gently to remove air pockets. Add a 1 to 2 inch mound of mulch around your tree to help the ground retain moisture, protect the roots, and reduce weeds. Water deeply until the ground is completely saturated. Water every day for the first week and about twice weekly for the first 2 to 3 months while your tree is establishing.

When To Prune Trees In Zone 4

Most growing zone 4 trees should be pruned in late winter or early spring. This includes deciduous and evergreen trees. Zone 4 flowering trees that bloom in spring should be pruned when they stop blooming. Trim off any dead, diseased, or broken branches when you notice them.
