Where To Plant This Dogwood Tree

Plant this adaptable tree in a spot that has wll drained, acidic soil with full sun to part shade exposure in grow zones 5-8.

White Kousa Dogwood Tree Care

When planting your Dogwood be sure you have the right location and conditions for your new tree to thrive. Spring and fall are ideal times to plant. However, if you avoid freezing and hot temperatures you can plant almost any time of the year.

Planting

These trees tolerate full sun to part shade and prefer soil that is well-drained, acidic, and nutrient rich. Mulching aids in keeping the shallow roots cool and moist. Add a layer of 2 inches of mulch. Pine straw or bark is a great choice for Dogwoods since they do like a slightly acidic soil. Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the chances of pests and disease.

Watering

Dogwoods should be watered often enough that the soil does not dry completely, but is not saturated. Dogwoods tend to have shallow roots so watering deeply less often is preferred to watering a little every day. This will help the roots grow properly.

Fertilizing

Fertilize in early spring and when planting with our slow release fertilizer to give your tree a boost.

Maintenance

Dogwoods don't generally require pruning, but if needed prune when they are dormant to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches.

Dogwoods are deer tolerant and can be considered the perfect flowering tree for zone 5, zone 6, zone 7, zone 8, or zone 9. The best way to prevent disease and pests is by providing the appropriate care for your plants. Proper location choice, watering and fertilization are the keys to your success. The Kousa Dogwood is disease and pest resistant.

Landscape ideas

At only 15 to 25 feet tall and wide at maturity and a tolerance of full sun to part shade the White Kousa Dogwood is a good fit for just about any location in your yard.

If you have any natural areas around your property, plant your dogwood off to the side to make it really stand out. The Dogwood is a great focal tree to build your landscape around. You will love looking out your window and seeing your kousa dogwood blossoms flutter in the breeze.

The roots of the Kousa Dogwood are noninvasive so they are great for planting near homes, pools, driveways, and sidewalks with no fear of problems.

Hostas are a perfect complement to your dogwood tree because these shade loving perennials perform well planted in large clusters underneath.

The White Kousa Dogwood even makes a perfect specimen tree at night; simply add an uplight to show your tree off after dark.
