The Shumard Oak tree is impressive and stunning. Shiny green lobed leaves emerge in spring and get the beauty started. In late summer, acorns begin to form, decorating your tree fall through early winter. The brilliant red and orange autumn foliage will really liven up your landscape.

Shumard Oaks love full sun and are adaptable to any type of soil. Be sure to fertilize with our balanced, slow release fertilizer when planting and again in spring especially if you have poor soil. Fertilizing will help your tree achieve an optimal growth rate. Water deeply about twice per week for about the first 3 months so the roots will grow properly. Shumard Oak FAQ

How Fast Does A Shumard Oak Trees Grow?

This tree is known to be a fast grower and pushes 2-3 feet in height per year until it reaches a mature height of 40-60 feet.

Why Is My Shumard Oak Not Green?

These trees do not do well in shallow limestone soil where iron deficiency is very probable. The leaves on the tree will turn yellow in color and the lack of iron for the shumard will cause die-back which can lead to excessive leaf loss and death of your tree.

Are The Roots On This Tree Invasive?

This tree is known to have surface roots that arent considered invasive. Consider that this tree will grow to be 30-40 feet wide at maturity when picking a spot to plant.

Shumard Oak Care

Shumard Oak Trees are easy to grow and extremely adaptable. Spring and Fall are ideal times to plant. However, if you avoid freezing and hot temperatures you can plant your Oak tree almost any time of the year.

This Oak thrives in full sun and is adaptable to any soil, even tolerating wet areas. These trees are drought tolerant once established. Water deeply twice weekly for the first 3 months after planting. This helps the roots establish properly. Add a layer of 2 to 3 inches of mulch when planting to help keep the soil moist. Do not allow the mulch to touch the trunk as this increases the risk of pests and disease. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow release fertilizer. Oaks do not generally require pruning, but, if needed, prune when they are dormant in winter or early spring to remove any dead, dying, or crowded branches, or to maintain shape. This Oak is pollution and salt tolerant and rarely have issues with insects or disease.

Landscape ideas

Be sure to provide your Shumard Oak tree plenty of room to grow. Reaching heights up to 80 feet and a width up to 60 feet at maturity, this oak is a substantial tree. This tree is ideal to be your landscape’s focal point. If you have a large yard or piece of land, oaks are great for planting in a row to provide shade in the summer.
