Pro Tips
- Giving your Pink Muhly Grass a cut in late winter or early spring will keep your grass in amazing shape. However, your plant will be just fine if you do happen to forget about it. A little pampering goes a long way with this plant, and doing so will ensure that you have the best growth and blooms. Whether you're a low-maintenance or no-maintenance plant person, Pink Muhly tolerates neglect and will still look great.
- We recommend a thick coat of mulch prior to winter for our growing zone 6 customers. Apply at least 2 inches of mulch extending a few inches beyond the rootzone for best results. This will protect your grass during the coldest temperatures.

When does muhly grass bloom?
This beautiful grass is a perennial that comes back year after year with pleasant green foliage in spring and early summer. It offers gorgeous, show-stopping blooms late summer through fall.
Planting Location
Before you plant your Pink Muhly Grass be sure to choose a location that will allow it to thrive. It's pollution, flood, and salt tolerant as well as deer, insect and disease resistant. This grass is recommended for hardiness zones 6 to 9. It grows and flowers best in full sun, but tolerates part shade, especially in zones 8 and 9. Muhly grass prefers well-drained soil, but is adaptable to a variety of soil types. Planting in an area that is prone to standing water will encourage root rot and will also decrease its growth rate and flowering ability. If you plan to plant a lot of muhly grass, we suggest planting them 2-3 ft apart from each other. If you are in growing zone 6, your dormant plant may need to be overwintered.
Watering
We suggest that you water deeply twice per week for the first 2 to 3 months. The deep roots of this plant make it very drought tolerant once it’s established. We recommend that you water thoroughly during times of extreme heat, especially in the first summer after planting. Pink Muhly only needs occasional watering once it reaches maturity. However, if the surrounding soil is thoroughly dry (to a depth of at least 2 inches) during periods of heat or drought, apply an inch or so of water.
Fertilization
This ornamental grass does not require fertilization. However, if your plants are struggling to show significant growth, feed them a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in late winter or early spring for optimal growth.
This stunning ornamental perennial grass will add color and texture to any landscape. It's a perfect fit for any low-maintenance garden. Even in winter, it retains its shape as the pink airy clusters and green leaf blades fade away. This grass is fabulous for creating whimsical walkways, mass and group plantings, or for staggering throughout your landscape. It's a gardener's dream! You can even try growing this stunning plant in containers for a great look that you can place anywhere. Plant them in pots on decks or patios. Just be sure to move the potted dormant grass into a garage or basement during winter if you are in growing zone 6.
Pink Muhly loves companion plants. Plant it alongside complementary flowers like agastache or rabbitbrush for a sweet, pleasant contrast.
Plant it near a mailbox, entryway, or in any area you want to highlight.
Our favorite use of this whimsical plant is for mass plantings. Groups of 3 to 5 create a lovely look in foundation plantings or in mixed beds.
