Succulents

Succulents are tough, drought-resistant plants that have thickened leaves and stems that hold onto water. These plants are well suited to dry climates but are adaptable. Most succulents are relatively small and low-growing, making them excellent potted plants and groundcovers. These plants are also attractive and unique. They offer interesting textures and varying colors.

How to Care for Succulent Plants

Succulents, including sempervivum, are incredibly easy to grow and maintain. These plants usually grow best in full sun. They are adaptable and can thrive in most well-drained soils. They can easily grow in nutrient-poor, dry, rocky, and sandy soils. Newly planted succulents should be watered once or twice per week for the first month or 2 to help them establish. After establishing, they are very drought tolerant. Succulents require little, if any, fertilizer. They tend to grow slowly and do not like excess nitrogen. So if you chose to fertilize, choose a blend that is lower in nitrogen and go light in general. Use maybe ½ of what is recommended to see how your plant responds to the food.

Potted Succulents

Plant potted succulents, like sempervivum in shallow pots with well-drained organic planting mix or a soil specially formulated for succulents and cacti. The pots should have plenty of drainage holes to keep the planting medium from holding too much moisture. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering. These are low-maintenance plants that will thrive on a bit of neglect!
