What Are Good Companion Plants For This Shrub?
Viburnum, weigela and rose shrubs pair well in borders or as foundation plantings with Little Princess Spirea.
As long as you avoid extreme temps you can plant your Little Princess Spirea almost anytime from spring through fall.
This Spirea thrives in full to part sun and is adaptable to any moist, well-drained soil. Water deeply when planting and 2 times per week for the first 3 months while your plant is establishing. Once established, Spireas are drought tolerant. However, they will perform best if you keep them watered once weekly when there is no rain in spring and summer. Add 2-3 inches of mulch to prevent weeds and help keep the soil moist. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer in spring after the chance of frost has passed.
After your Little Princess Spirea has finished flowering prune back or "deadhead" the spent flowers. This will promote re-blooming. An easy way to deadhead is to lightly shear the whole bush rather than trying to prune every flower. This light pruning will also help to maintain the shape and compact nature of the plant. Heavy pruning is optional, but the Spirea does respond well to pruning especially when used to rejuvenate an older plant. Prune up to 1/3 of your plant in late winter or early spring for best results.
The Little Princess Spirea is pest and disease resistant.
The Little Princess Spirea is perfect for border or foundation plantings. These shrubs look great planted along a walkway or around a mixed bed, garden or patio. Plant in clusters of 3 or more for loads of pink blooms. Add to a cottage garden for a soft and feminine look. Use Spirea around small ornamental trees for a lush, full look in your landscape. The Little Princess Spirea looks fantastic planted in front of dark privacy trees and shrubs. It is a great way to soften and add depth to your landscape. We recommend planting your spirea about 5 feet apart to allow for separation when fully matured. For a tighter hedge or border plant 3.5 to 4 feet apart.
