What are Poplar Trees?

Poplars, known botanically as Populus, are deciduous shade trees. This group of trees has a large genetic diversity. Poplars grow in North American, Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. They are native throughout the United States. These hardy trees can tolerate dry or wet conditions.

Poplars are very fast growing trees. Lombardy Poplars can grow 6 feet or more in a single growing season. The growth rate of the Tulip Poplar tree is 3 to 5 feet per year. Read more on fast growing shade trees.

How Tall do Poplar Trees Grow?

Poplar Trees can grow from about 50 to 150 feet tall. Tulip Poplars grow over 70 feet tall. Lombardy Poplars grow to about 50 feet tall.

How Long do Poplar Trees Live?

True Poplar Trees live from 20 to 150 years. Tulip Poplars are actually related to Magnolia Trees and have been known to live up to 500 years, but 100 to 300 years is much more common in the home landscape.

How Do You Plant Poplar Trees?

When planting a Poplar Tree start by digging a hole about twice the width of the root ball and not quite as deep as the root ball is tall. Place your tree level in the hole. The top of the root ball should be slightly higher than the existing soil line. Backfill with the soil you dug out initially. Water deeply until the ground is fully saturated. Apply 1 to 2 inches of mulch to help retain soil moisture, protect the roots, and reduce weeds. Extend the mulch mound a couple inches beyond the tree’s canopy. Water daily for the first week and 1 to 3 times weekly for the first 2 months until your tree is established. Be sure to water deeply with a hose at the base of your tree to help the roots grow properly.
