Phlox is an American native flowering perennial. Garden phlox (phlox paniculata) grow upright and flower in summer to early fall. Tall Phlox is a native wildflower that grows 2 to 4 feet tall. Creeping Phlox (p. subulata) is also known as moss pink, moss phlox, and mountain phlox. This flowering ground cover is low growing and blooms during spring. Phlox plants are drought, salt, pollution, and erosion tolerant and deer resistant.

Creeping Phlox are lovely groundcovers that reach about 6 inches tall and 2 feet wide at maturity. This plant is covered with blooms in spring and has a low, spreading habit that becomes mat-like over time. The evergreen foliage is lush and deep green with petite, slender leaves. Plant in mixed beds, rock, woodland, and cottage gardens, containers, low walls, and next to walkways. This spreading groundcover cascades like a waterfall over edges and down slopes if you like or keep them trimmed them for a tight, clean edging. Plant in mass for a bold pop of color and a unique grass substitute. Moss pinks are great for mixed containers. These hardy perennials tolerate sandy and rocky sites.
Tall Garden Phlox bloom throughout the summer and into early fall. Their flowering season arrives in July and continues into September. Creeping Phlox bloom during spring, usually from March through May or April through June depending on your climate and weather conditions.
Spring and fall are the best times to plant these native plants. In cooler zones with mild summers, summer is a great time to plant. In hotter zones with mild winters, winter planting works well.
Water your potted plant thoroughly before planting. Dig a hole twice the width and almost as tall as the root ball. Once placed in the hole the root ball of your plant should be slightly higher than the soil line. Fill the hole with water, backfill the hole with soil, and tamp the soil down gently with your hands to remove air pockets. Apply mulch around your plant to help the soil retain moisture. Water again until the water begins to pool. Water daily for the first week.
Phlox are recommended for US growing zones 3 to 9. They perform best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Some subtle afternoon shade may be ideal in hot climates. Water deeply 2 times per week for the first 2 to 3 months while your plant is establishing. Once established, these plants are drought tolerant, but will grow best with a deep watering once weekly during hot and dry periods. Add 1 to 2 inches of mulch to prevent weeds and help retain soil moisture. Fertilize with our slow release fertilizer when planting and in spring for best results. Deadheading isn't necessary, but it can increase blooms and extend bloom time.
