When to Plant North Carolina Evergreen Trees

Spring and fall are the best seasons for planting evergreen trees in North Carolina. Most evergreens can be planted safely during winter when the ground is digable. Tropical evergreen trees and other cold sensitive evergreens should not be planted in winter, especially in the cooler regions of the state. Summer is the worst time to plant evergreen trees. They are more likely to suffer from transplant and drought stress at this time. 

How to Plant Evergreen Trees

Water your potted evergreen thoroughly immediately before planting your tree. Next, dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball, but not quite as deep as it is tall. Place your North Carolina evergreen tree evenly in the hole. Be sure the top of the root ball is slightly higher than the existing soil line. Then, backfill with the existing soil. Water deeply until the water begins to pool on the surface of the ground. Apply a 1 to 2 inch mound of pine straw or pine bark mulch around your evergreen trees to reduce watering needs, retain soil moisture, protect the roots, and keep weeds away. Extend the mulch a couple inches beyond the tree’s canopy. Do not pile mulch against the trunk.

When to Prune North Carolina Evergreen Trees

Winter or early spring is the best time to prune most North Carolina evergreen trees. However, spring blooming evergreen trees should be pruned after their bloom period has ended to avoid removing flower buds. Fall when temperatures are cooling down is also a good time for pruning North Carolina evergreen trees. Minor pruning can be done anytime. Broken, dead, or diseased branches should be pruned off as soon as you notice them.

How to Care for North Carolina Evergreen Trees

For the first 2 to 3 months while your evergreen tree is establishing water deeply at the base of the tree 1 to 2 times per week. Water once weekly during the first summer, especially in the warmer regions of the state. Evergreen trees prefer acidic soil and will absorb nutrients better when the soil pH is on the acidic side. Fertilize evergreen trees of North Carolina in spring with a balanced slow release fertilizer.
