What are Berries?

Berries are edible fruit that generally come from shrubs, plants, or vines. Some examples include strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and goji berries. We include grapes in this group. These healthy fruits can be eaten on a variety of diets. Berries can be fairly easy to grow if you start with the proper conditions. Berry plants generally prefer acidic soil that drains well. Many berry bushes are small enough to grow and produce fruit well in pots.

How Do You Plant Berries?

Prepare for planting by watering your potted Berries and getting the root ball thoroughly damp. When planting Berry bushes, dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball and slightly more shallow than the root ball is in height. Place your Berry plant evenly in the hole. The top of the root ball should be slightly higher than the existing soil line. Backfill with native soil unless you need to amend your soil. Use up to 50% organic planting mix or other appropriate amendment. Water deeply until the water begins to pool on the ground surface. Apply 1 to 2 inches of mulch around your plants to eliminate weeds, help the soil retain water, and protect the roots.

how to prune berry plants

How to Prune Berry Plants

Berries should be pruned in late winter or early spring. Dwarf berry bushes don’t require pruning other than to rejuvenate an older plant. You can increase fruit yields and the health of your plant by pruning older plants. The heaviest bearing canes are the new, strong, upright canes. Prune back any low spreading branches. Prune off the oldest canes at ground level. Head back any overgrown canes to even up the shape of your Berries. Remove any weak, thin shoots. Limit your pruning to no more than ⅓ of the plant. Prune away dead, diseased, or broken branches right away.

How to Care for Berry Plants

Plant Berries in full sun and acidic, well-drained, but moist soil. Berry plants prefer moist soil during the growing season. Feed in spring with our Very Berry Fertilizer. Mulch Berry Bushes to encourage the ground to hold moisture and protect the roots during temperature extremes. This will reduce watering needs and eliminate weeds that steal nutrients. You can plant berries in pots if your soil is not ideal or you don’t have a good planting location.
