Filed in: Tree Information

Redbud Trees are stunning deciduous trees that usher in spring with a beautiful show of color like no other tree. Redbuds are known for their small vibrant blooms that seemingly explode from delicate buds in early spring. In fact, Redbud flower blooms arrive well before the leaves have even emerged from their dormancy. The heart-shaped leaves of these trees shimmer in the sun and are always a focal point. Small, low maintenance, adaptable, and native to the US, Redbud Trees are the perfect addition to any yard or landscaping project.

Additionally, its sweet pea smell will add a beautiful fragrance to your landscape. The Eastern Redbud’s leaves change throughout the seasons, giving you color that lasts from spring to autumn. How to Plant a Redbud Tree

Once you’ve chosen the Redbud Tree that suits your landscape, you’ll be ready to plant. Redbuds are low maintenance and should be planted in moist, well-drained soil. They thrive in full sun to partial shade. Select the perfect spot and dig a hole that’s three times the size of your root ball. Make sure that your root ball is even with the ground once planted, and fill in the hole with soil. Then water deeply.

Redbud Tree Maintenance & Season Care Tips

  1. Water your newly planted redbud tree at least twice per week for the first couple of months. Once it is established, it will only need occasional watering during times of extreme heat and drought.
  2. Most Redbud varieties begin to produce fragrant, edible blooms three to five years after planting.
  3. Apply a quality, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. You can also add fertilizer when you initially plant to give your tree a boost at becoming established.
  4. Applying quality mulch around the base of the tree can be very beneficial to the health of your Redbud. Avoid having the mulch rest on the trunk, as that can create pest problems. Applying mulch will not only help your tree retain moisture but will help keep weeds at bay.
  5. Redbuds don’t need pruning. However, if you choose to do so, it’s best done right after blooming has stopped in the spring. Avoid pruning during extreme heat or in the winter during dormancy, or you risk bloom loss.
  6. Redbud Trees drop pea-like seed pods at the end of the growing season, but they aren’t considered to be overly messy.
  7. Redbuds don’t have many problems with pests and diseases. However, if you experience common pest problems such as scale, you can treat the tree trunk with horticultural oil. Borer insects can be held at bay by making sure that your tree doesn’t get damaged or have weak points where insects can try to infiltrate.

Adding Redbuds to your landscape will create bursts of color that are sure to impress. They also have pleasant fragrances, unlike some other flowering tree varieties. They are native and non-invasive, so you can feel good about planting them.
