Groundcover junipers are my very favorite Juniper plants and I think the prettiest ground cover you can buy! Low growing Junipers, like the Blue Rug, Blue Pacific, and the Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper are perfect for replacing grass in hard to mow areas or just adding some low profile, high beauty to a mixed bed, garden, or border. These Junipers will take your breath away when planted in rock gardens or cascading over walls.

Junipers generally grow best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Plan for at least 5-6 hours of sun. These hardy shrubs adapt to any soil as long as there is no sitting water. Junipers are great street shrubs because they tolerate pollution and salt well. Mulching your plants with a couple inches of pine straw or bark is great for protecting the roots, retaining moisture, and keeping the lower branches from touching the soil directly. The added benefit with using pine is that it will add some acidity to your soil over time which helps your shrubs take up nutrients. Water your plant deeply a couple times a week for the first month or two. Junipers are extremely drought and heat tolerant after establishing. Fertilize when planting and in early spring with a slow release fertilizer for optimal growth.
Junipers are disease, pest and deer resistant. Generally, as long as you avoid overly saturated soils and fertilize if you have nutrient poor soil you will not see pests or disease.
The Blue Pacific Juniper is a hardy, low maintenance plant that is great for preventing soil erosion. The feathery, green foliage transitions to a silvery green in the winter months. This low growing evergreen is great for adding texture to almost any landscape. The Blue Pacific only reaches about 1 foot tall, but spreads up to 6 feet wide.
The fast growing Blue Rug Juniper is a gorgeous creeping groundcover that only reaches 4-6 inches tall, but spreads to 6 feet wide. Perfect for those steep hills you’ve had such a hard time growing anything on, this plant is great for preventing soil erosion. The Blue Rug is extremely disease resistant and low maintenance.
The Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper is a compact groundcover juniper that grows in a lovely, cascading fashion that flows outward along the ground, over rocks, or down a wall or container for a stunning, natural look that you just cannot beat. The lush foliage is a vivid green that transitions to hints of blue and purple as temperatures drop. This hardy evergreen is drought and pollution tolerant as well as pest and disease resistant. The Japanese Garden Juniper has a mature size of about 1 foot tall and up to 6 feet wide.
