Junipers are indisputably the most useful and easy to grow landscape shrubs out there. These evergreen bushes are hardy, beautiful, low maintenance, and grow throughout the United States. These versatile plants are widely used by professional landscapers because they thrive with almost no care and offer year-round interest. Now, lets get to Juniper Facts! Read on learn about landscaping with Junipers, Juniper care, and types of Junipers

Junipers in the Landscape

Junipers are probably best known for their amazing capacity to control erosion. This is why you often see pretty blue evergreens on slopes and hills. You won’t find a better option for hillside planting. No more mowing down that steep hill for you!  Replace that grass with a ground cover Juniper!

Groundcover junipers are my very favorite Juniper plants and I think the prettiest ground cover you can buy! Low growing Junipers, like the Blue Rug, Blue Pacific, and the Dwarf Japanese Garden Juniper are perfect for replacing grass in hard to mow areas or just adding some low profile, high beauty to a mixed bed, garden, or border. These Junipers will take your breath away when planted in rock gardens or cascading over walls.

Junipers shrubs like the Angelica, Blue Star, Gold Coast, Grey Owl, and Parson’s are striking in mixed beds, foundation and mass plantings, and rock gardens. You will love these colorful evergreens as low hedges and borders too!

Juniper trees like the Blue Point Juniper and Blue Arrow Juniper are perfect privacy trees. These pretty evergreen trees are a great way to add some height to your landscape and anchor the corners of your home. Plant Blue Points in groups of 3 in a bed for some landscape flare. These look great just about anywhere with an attractive loose feathery look that stands out against the evergreen tree competition.

Add rich color, unique texture, exciting depth, and FOUR seasons of interest to your landscape with easy to grow Junipers!

Juniper Care

Junipers generally grow best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade. Plan for at least 5-6 hours of sun. These hardy shrubs adapt to any soil as long as there is no sitting water. Junipers are great street shrubs because they tolerate pollution and salt well. Mulching your plants with a couple inches of pine straw or bark is great for protecting the roots, retaining moisture, and keeping the lower branches from touching the soil directly. The added benefit with using pine is that it will add some acidity to your soil over time which helps your shrubs take up nutrients. Water your plant deeply a couple times a week for the first month or two. Junipers are extremely drought and heat tolerant after establishing. Fertilize when planting and in early spring with a slow release fertilizer for optimal growth.

Junipers are disease, pest and deer resistant. Generally, as long as you avoid overly saturated soils and fertilize if you have nutrient poor soil you will not see pests or disease.
