High Fragrance Camellia Options

Filed in: Shrub Information

Camellias are incredibly desirable plants. With their lovely evergreen foliage and gorgeous colorful blooms that show up in fall and winter, they are truly distinctive. They also tolerate more shade, heat, and drought than a majority of flowering plants. Additionally, they're incredibly easy to grow. Not all camellia bushes have fragrant blooms and some that do are more scented than others. If you are seeking fragrant camellias, read on. Here are our high fragrance camellia options:

How to Care for High Fragrance Camellias

  • Camellias generally grow in zones 7 to 10. In zones 8 to 10 you can plant throughout the year as long as the ground is digable and you offer plenty of water and shade in summer. Zone 7 should skip winter planting and wait for spring.

  • Most camellias prefer part sun or part shade and fertile, moist, acidic soil. Avoid full sun (unless recommended for your particular camellia) especially in warm climates. These plants can experience sunburn.

  • Water camellias deeply 2 to 3 times per week when they are newly planted. After 2 to 3 months they will be established and drought tolerant. A nice layer of mulch is a great way to keep the soil moist and reduce watering needs. It also protects the roots and keeps weeds away.

  • Fertilize camellias in early spring before new growth surges.

  • Camellias should be pruned after flowering has ceased to avoid pruning off any flower buds that become next year’s blooms.

  • Luckily, camellias are quite tough plants. They are adaptable, deer resistant, and heat, drought, and salt tolerant. They require little, if any, care once they are established.

Now you’re familiar with our high fragrance camellia options and you know how to care for them. We hope you have found one you love that will fit perfectly into your landscape. Camellias are such amazing plants, scent is just an added bonus. You can’t go wrong with any of our healthy camellia plants. Order one today! Happy planting!
