Are you a notoriously bad gift giver? Or maybe you are just out of present ideas? Or, heck, too exhausted by the stresses of life to shop and shop and shop. I hear you! I feel the same. And while cash and gift certificates are cool, you want to show that you care. You want to show that you put thought into your gift. Giving a tree as a gift is a beautiful way to share life with a friend, family member, or coworker. The best part? Gifting trees means you're giving a present that can last a lifetime. While they may start out as miniature cute gifts, they grow into outdoor masterpieces. Here are some top picks for gifting trees by occasion.
Gifting Trees for Holidays
Christmas
Christmas is a great time of the year for gift trees! Send a tabletop tree or mini Christmas tree to your family to celebrate the holidays. Live Christmas tree gifts are a great way to show a loved one, friend or coworker that you care. Fresh trees make wonderful indoor decor and can be planted outside when the holidays have ended. It's a great way to preserve a memory and do something good for the planet!

My favorites are the flocked Cypress Small Potted Christmas Tree, the Meyer Lemon Holiday Bush, the Holiday Tuscan Blue Rosemary Pyramid and the Sapphire Cypress Desktop Christmas Tree.
Valentine’s Day
Show your life partner you love them with a special tree that symbolizes your undying love for them.
My top picks for Valentine’s Day gift trees are the Double Knock Out Rose Tree and the Pinky Winky Hydrangea Tree. If you have more space, opt for a fabulous flowering cherry tree like the Kwanzan Cherry Tree.
Mother’s Day
Moms love a thoughtful gift. A living tree is a great way to show mom you love her. If you live close by, go on over and plant it for her too;)
For mom, I’d recommend the Pink Double Knock Out Rose Tree, Coral Knock Out Rose Tree, Weeping Yoshino Cherry Tree, Wisteria Tree, or for more funky, fun mom’s I’d go for the Corkscrew Willow or the Coral Bark Japanese Maple.
Father’s Day
Dads like trees too!
For dad, I’d go with a classic. Consider a Weeping Willow, October Glory Maple, American Sycamore Tree, or Northern Red Oak. If your dad is more of an evergreen guy consider getting him an Emerald Green Arborvitae, Black Dragon Cryptomeria, or a Blue Point Juniper. Thuja Green Giants are a great gift to help your dad get started on a privacy screen.
Celebrations for Gifting Trees
Birthday
Birthdays are a wonderful time to gift a tree. When your loved one plants your tree, they will be reminded of your thoughtfulness every year on their special day.
Gifting trees for birthdays takes more consideration. Consider what your friend, family member, or acquaintance would like. Factor in colors, size, etc. Choose a gift tree that will fit the person and their yard.

Anniversary
Whether it is for your spouse or a friend or family member’s anniversary, gift trees are a great way to show you care.
I would consider the same trees as I recommended for Valentine’s Day. A Red Dogwood or an Okame Cherry Tree would also be wonderful choices.
Memorial Tree Gifts
Planting a tree is a wonderful way to remember a loved one or a treasured pet. It’s a way to “be with them” in a tranquil and beautiful setting. Your friend or family member can enjoy watching their tree grow and bloom becoming more and more lovely as time passes. I recommend flowering trees or Japanese Maples for memorial trees. They have immeasurable beauty and add color to a landscape.
Here are a few of my favorites trees for a living tribute:
This unique tree boosts purple foliage in spring, summer, and fall, and gorgeous pink blooms in spring. This plum tree adds regal color and beauty to the landscape and is a spectacular sight to remind you of your special loved one.
This redbud is cheerful and vibrant and a great way to memorialize a sunny soul. It has green, yellow, and orange leaves descending down each branch and fuschia blooms in spring.
Cherry blossoms are a symbol of the fleeting nature of life. They also represent renewal. Any flowering cherry tree is a wonderful way to remember someone. They are gorgeous trees rich with meaning. The Yoshino has lovely white blooms with hints of pink in spring.
This upright Japanese Maple grows up to 15 feet tall and wide. It is a breathtaking memorial tree with loads of color and charm. The leaves are distinctive and striking with shades of purple and red until they shed in late fall or early winter. For brighter color and a bit more height check out the Coral Bark Japanese Maple.
This is one of my favorite Weeping Japanese Maples. You’ll love the warm purples and reds and the soothing feeling this tree gives off.

Whether you want to celebrate a loved one, share love, or honor a life lost, gifting trees is a great way to show you care. Your options are endless. Consider the person you are gifting the tree to, their taste, and their yard before choosing a tree. If you still aren’t sure, Gift Cards aren’t a bad thing to give the gift of choosing a tree.
